Born on 17th May 1913 [Newmarket 3b: see note J28], the son of Percy and Daisy Rose CAMPS (née D'ARCY). The birth registration is
unusual. Possibly due to the fact he appears to have been registered as CAMPS when his mother only married Percy senior almost 3 years later.
Another index does in fact give his registration as Percy Camps D'ARCY (Newmarket Q3-1913 3B:854), the only instance found of this surname being used for him.
Grandson of William and Alice CAMPS. Grandfather William was custodian at Newmarket Cemetery, a position held by family members for many years,
living in a cottage that once stood just inside the main gate, in fact the Cemetery came to be known as "Campses".. His mother died in 1930
and father married Doris Josephine MURDOCH in 1931
In Q2-1936,in Newmarket, Percy (jun) married Stella MILLS, their address then was Southview Terrace, Exning Road, Newmarket, and had a daughter, Jean CAMPS (born in Q1-1940 in Liverpool, who he never lived to see), In the 1939 register Percy (senior) was cemetery custodian,living at Cemetery Cottage with his wife Doris J [28-10-1901], Sidney W CAMPS [11-12-1922] dining car attendant, Jack CAMPS [4-10-1924] grocer's errand boy, Joan MURDOCH [4-2-1927] later CAMPS, then CHINNICK, then BALL. Also there was Stella CAMPS [26-4-1903] married (probably wife of Percy junior. There are two closed records. |

HMS Kelly took part in the Norwegian campaign and was torpedoed on the night of 9th/10th May 1940. 27 of the crew died. They were still aboard ship when the
Kelly was towed back to Hebburn, Tyne and Wear and most were then buried in their home towns |
